Nature's Novel offers a solution to odor problems in waste management
systems and also those created by concentrated livestock population. EM
inoculation will create a fermentative culture in a lagoon or pit and will
eliminate the production of odor.
Putrefaction Vs. Fermentation
Biologically speaking, there are two pathways in the decomposition of
organic matter, putrefaction and fermentation. The true source of any odor
problem is rotting organic matter that has putrefied.
- Putrefaction
- The anaerobic rotting of organic matter and the by-products that
produce bad odors include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and solids.
- Fermentation
- An active process which occurs by using selected natural
microorganisms and the by-products are carbon dioxide, water, and a
lesser amount of solids.
- Solution
- The process of fermentation of organic matter is the solution to
this environmental challenge.
For the fermentation process to occur in a lagoon, the
microflora environment must be conducive to a fermentative culture. It is
possible to change that microflora environment with the introduction of a
selected group of natural microorganisms into the lagoon. With the
fermentation process, riddance or elimination of odor is possible because
the by-products of the fermentative culture are carbon dioxide and water,
which are environmentally friendly. EM Waste Treatment can reduce the risk
of surface and ground water contamination.
Research has been documented, and technology developed and perfected
for providing odor control in livestock confinement facilities. This technology
is currently used in livestock confinement facilities in nearly 80
countries, effectively reducing odor concentration levels.

The
fermentation process for livestock waste management creates environmentally
friendly by-products of water and carbon dioxide rather than the odor
causing by-products of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide created by the
putrefaction process. Some procedures may only mask or attempt to displace
the odor problem. Fermentation procedures treat the real source of odor by
creating the proper environment for odorless decomposition of organic
matter. EM Effective Microbial Inoculant facilitates this fermentative
process.
