AQUACULTURE AND WATER PURIFICATION

EM used in water treatment improves the quality and environment of the liquid. Through the fermentation pathway, it will tie-up excessive nutrients away from invasive species, such as algae, reduce sludge and ammonia, and improved dissolved oxygen and reduce turbidity.

The photosynthetic bacteria (PSBs) in the EM inoculation are naturally occurring purifying microorganisms. There are more than six classifications of the PSBs. Only specific groups work effectively in the water purification process. The purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacteria in the EM inoculate is the main group used in water purification and aquaculture.

Some properties of PSBs:

  • Enable breakdown of organic matter (sugars, amino acids, organic acids, etc.)
  • Allow propagation to occur in anaerobic conditions and through respiration in aerobic conditions.
  • Activate bacteria to eliminate hydrogen sulfide and nitric acid to remove the nitrogen. Their ability to break down ammonia is very strong.
  • Are a safe source of a single-cell protein, which can be important in aquatic food chains.

Other Characteristics:

  • PSBs are a live bacteria and should be handled as such.
  • The greater the number of live bacteria, the stronger their effectiveness.
  • PSBs are completely non toxic.
  • Even dead, PSBs are beneficial to the fish, as part of their diet, as it may help in disease prevention.
  • The bacteria carcasses contain many vital amino acids, vitamins, and have a high nutrient value. Vitamin B12 is particularly plentiful, as are carotenoids.

Water purification occurs only while the bacteria remain alive, so a maintenance level of live bacteria is required for good quality water. Fish may be raised in a safe, healthy environment with PSB.

Research documents of EM inoculated ponds may exhibit results in increasing the pounds of fish produced and harvested. The improved environment of the ponds leading to less stress in the fish were the main contributing factors in the results.

EM uses a consortia of microorganisms to accomplish the various tasks of improving our water and environment. The results are:

  • Increase in the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO)
  • Stablization of pH
  • Reduction of odor
  • Reduction of excessive nutrient in the pond
  • Reduction of sludge accumulation
  • Reduction of BOD
  • Reduction hydrogen sulfide
  • Reduction of COD
  • Reduction of levels of organic matter
  • Possible reduction of levels of iron
  • Possible reduction of levels of manganese
  • Improvement in turbidity

When the proper fermentive culture is attained, multiple benefits result from the inoculation. The microflora of the water is balanced and in harmony with nature, thus creating a pleasant environment for any activity from golfing to fish farming. With the pH in balance, water clarity restored, odors diminished, and DO increased, your water is ready to be used for your benefit - from irrigation of the greens to producing pounds of fish. Inoculation of water with EM helps restore the quality to the water treated.
